This diagram shows the approximate footprint of the Astra 2D satellite, and the dish size needed to successfully get signals off it across Europe.
Astra 2D carries the fta BBC programming, which is why its so desperately wanted by many viewers. As you can see, signal strengths fall off rapidly away from France and the UK, and big dishes are needed in many places.
